UPAVIM Crafts, the fair trade employer and importer, employs over 80 women on the outskirts of Guatemala City, in the community of La Esperanza or "Hope".  La Esperanza started as a squatters settlement and is rife with gang violence, lack of sanitation, and little access education, health care, and jobs.  With the fair trade micro-economy being built by UPAVIM, members of the community now have a source of steady employment and income, which has led to the opening of a bakery, a local clinic, prenatal care, improved housing, and micro-credit financing for new local ventures.
