Water conservation and development of alternative water supplies is necessary to meet our growing demand for fresh water. Captured rainwater is often used in landscaping, because the water is free of salts and other harmful minerals and does not have to be treated. Municipal water contains additives such as chlorine and minerals that roots have a hard time absorbing. Well water also has hard minerals which keeps roots from absorbing water. Rainwater is soft water and roots can absorb it much more efficiently. Rainwater is not only good for outdoor gardens, but can be used for indoor plants, water for pets and farm animals. Rainwater harvesting is a green and effective means to conserve our water supply.

Quick Rainwater Reference Guide:

• Rain at the rate of 1 inch per hour can yield 60 gallons in 6 minutes per 1,000 square feet of roof area.

• 3 to 4 gallons of rainwater storage capacity is suggested for each square foot of roof area.

• A total of 1 inch of rainfall can harvest 623 total gallons per 1,000 square feet of roof surface.

• In many communities, 30 to 50 percent of the total water is used for landscape irrigation.

• Overflows are essential on rain barrels to divert excess water to a linked companion tank or to a desired watering location.
