Featured Fair Trade Producer

UPAVIM Weaving Cooperative

 

The Spanish words that form the acromyn UPAVIM mean "united for a better life." UPAVIM is a self-governed cooperative that puts people before profits by producing high quality woven goods that generate living wages and money for family-care services. This fair trade craft program employs more than 65 women who produce beautiful Guatemalan textiles such a pillow covers, table runners, and other gifts.  


UPAVIM provides flexible scheduling, therefore allowing the members to gain income while managing their daily routine of motherhood, childcare, housework, and volunteering in other programs at the UPAVIM community center. Based in a squatter community on the outskirts of Guatemala City, wages from UPAVIM directly benefit multiple families that take part by providing a fair wage, along with the new benefits of family healthcare at a clinic established through the program.
