Reclaimed Longleaf Yellow Pine

Longleaf Pine Flooring - Reclaimed Lumber - priced per square foot

Cut and milled about 100 years ago, this sought-after Longleaf Yellow Pine Flooring has been carefully removed from turn-of-last-century North Texas buildings now scheduled for demolition. Install this old world flooring into your home and you will discover a versatile wood that is now very rare, but once covered about 60 million acres in the Southeastern states and was a key material in the founding of the new nation.

Our Reclaimed Longleaf Yellow Pine Flooring provides that warm beauty of a historic American floor. Longleaf was the choice for wood flooring in Eastern United States in the 18th & 19th century due to it's beauty, hardness, and past availability. The hardness of Longleaf minimizes scratches and scars, therefore making it long-lived and easy to maintain; whereas the density of the floor provided good insulating properties and reduced possibility of catching fire due to stray sparks from the hearth.

By choosing reclaimed wood you also avoid the common problem of plank shrinkage which often occurs 1 to 2 years after the installation of new cut pine flooring. Even when kiln dried, the new cut pine flooring often shrinks in width and the floors are left with 1/8 to 1/4" gaps between the planks. Our reclaimed Longleaf Yellow Pine Flooring has been curing for 100 years and will not shrink in width after installation.

The Tree

A Longleaf Pine tree matures in about 100 to 150 years and will reach about 24 inches in diameter and 80 feet tall. The lumber was prized for it's strength and both the British and early American Navy used the stands for masts of sailing ships. Also, many wood framed homes, barns, factories, and other structures in the 18th through early 20th century requiring strong timbers for large spans used Longleaf Yellow Pine. Small stands of Longleaf is now found in isolated areas of Southern Georgia and Florida, but re-forestation projects are now planting the species in its original environment.

Process

Our supplier works with local demolition companies and salvages re-usable lumber by employing a team of experienced carpenters to skillfully remove the wood flooring before the heavy equipment rolls in. The Longleaf planks are taken to a local mill and sorted, closely inspected for any signs of infestation and de-nailed. The floor is reconditioned with a newly planed top surface; this process removes the old finish and approximately 1/16" of the thickness.

LEED Elidgible

The Reclaimed Longleaf Yellow Pine Flooring is 100% reused and provides credit towards your LEED certified project. Also, as the flooring is removed from buildings in North Central Texas, if your project is within Texas you can receive credit for using locally sourced materials.

Installation

The planks are center-matched tongue & grooved and installs like ordinary hardwood flooring, with nails driven diagonally through the tongues so that nail heads are hidden. After installation, the flooring should be sanded and finished in place. We recommend either using a natural penetrating oil such as AFM Penetrating Oil or a low VOC top finish such as AFM BP Polyureseal.
