Don't be confused by the term linoleum
We say true linoleum because ever since synthetic vinyl flooring was introduced in the mid-1950s, the term linoleum has often been used incorrectly to describe all resilient flooring. But, there is a difference, linoleum (lin - from flax, oleum - from linseed oil) was patented in the 1860s, (a long time before petrochemicals and plastics) and is all-natural flooring made only with these ingredients: Linseed Oil, Pine Rosin, Limestone, Wood Flour, Pigments, and Jute.
Natural, Comfortable, and Durable
Marmoleum is ultra-durable and is popularly known as a 40 year floor. So durable in fact Marmoleum is a product of choice for the harshest commercial environments such as hospitals and schools where it stands up to heavy traffic, constant equipment movement, spills, stains, and impacts. Marmoleum's natural resilience or stiff-flexibility protects it from impact and castor damage and is also the reason that it feels so good to walk on. But 40 years? Yes, Marmoleum resists signs of wear because the color pattern goes all the way through and the natural pigments will never fade.
Healthy Indoor Environment
Marmoleum is the natural choice
made with natural materials and installed with solvent free adhesives, there are no harmful VOC's being emitted. When your issues include keeping a dust free environment due to allergy and asthma concerns, again Marmoleum is the natural choice. The anti-static properties of marmoleum not only reduce the potential for electric shock, but makes the floor easier to clean in that dust and dirt will not easily adhere to it. The bactericidal properties of Marmoleum prevent micro-organisms including Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus Aureus from multiplying themselves. It is the continual oxidation of the linseed oil that enables this phenomenon. For these reasons, Marmoleum is the floor covering of choice in many hospitals, as well as being recommended by medical professionals for people with respiratory disorders.
No Special Cleaning or Maintenance
Marmoleum might just be the easiest floor to maintain. It's naturally anti-static, meaning it won't be a dust magnet, making it easy to sweep and damp mop. After installation, a mop-on acrylic or wax finish should be applied to your Marmoleum floor. The floor can be buffed for an added shine. And since the color goes all the way through the floor any scratches or burns can be rubbed away with a nylon pad or steel wool.
Forbo has a sincere mission of sustainability. Life-cycle assessment scores show exceptional performance for Marmoleum and the raw materials all stem from readily renewable natural sources. These raw materials are harvested or extracted with relatively little energy consumption. Linseed oil, the most important raw material used to make linoleum, is obtained by pressing the seeds of flax plan. Forbo also blends in tall oil, a recycled post-industrial by-product of the Kraft paper industry. Rosin, the binding agent in Marmoleum, is tapped from European pine trees without affecting growth, together with linseed oil, rosin creates the floors strength and flexibility. Wood Flour is used to bind the pigments, ensure color fastness, and optimize a smooth surface. Forbo has chosen not to use tropical hardwood flour but flour made from timber grown in controlled European forests, where every tree felled is replaced. The beautiful colors are created by using ecologically responsible pigments that do not contain heavy metals. The backing is spun from jute grown in India and Bangladesh. Forbo makes an effort to use as much organically grown product as possible. As long as the sun shines and the rain falls, Forbo can produce Marmoleum.
